is six? This girl!!!!

I can’t believe she is six already.  I don’t have her deets yet so I will update later for that.

Things that happened in her fifth year (in no particular order):

  • she finished her last year of preschool
  • she learned how to ride a bike this summer
  • she started kindergarten
  • she has two boyfriends (OMG!)
  • she joined the Daisies
  • she has lost two teeth
  • she had her first sleepover
  • got her first mani/pedi
  • went to Mexico for the first time

I’m sure I am missing so much.  She is so busy and loving it.  Let’s see what adventures my six year old gets into this year.

Happy birthday to my Pirate Princess Daisy!  Love you twenty hundreds and all the numbers in the world!!!

a daisy in training…

After a few emails back and forth, I can now say that Mia is now a Girl Scout Daisy.

first day as a Daisy, 9/24/14
first day as a Daisy, 9/24/14

I never thought about Mia being a Girl Scout. I would see them at school with their sashes or vests, selling cookies or their project posters. But I never ever thought about Mia being one of them.

And so here we are, one meeting under her (and my) belt. I have put all the patches on her vest. I have been obsessing over the Girls Scout GCNWI Programs website.  I am waiting for the second meeting.  I have bought the Daisy manual (it is not required but still). I know where the Girl Scout office it.  Already planning the Girl Scout cookie assault that will happen in a few months.  She is working on her Girl Scout promise.  She needs to learn that to get her first Daisy patch.  So much to do.

And yes, this is after ONE MEETING. I just crack myself up. Daisies is a two year commitment. Bring it!

9th birthday…

Happy 9th Birthday to my first born!

He is just a wonderful boy who I am very proud of.  Loves soccer and really got into FIFA this summer so he wanted a FIFA themed party. We had his party at Haunted Trails with lots of his school, soccer and friend friends.  Spent five hours there.

Diego had a blast and that is all that counts. Love you my little man.

(Deets: 62.2 lbs and 4′ 6.5″)

quandary…

I have a quandary. My girl is roughly 5 1/2. I know she is aching to get her nails done. I, on the other hand, am not ready for that. Anytime I see a little girl with their nails painted (either finger or toe), I cringe.

She is only five, FIVE!! She is a girly girl.  Loves to pretend she has a boyfriend or pretend that her dolls have a boyfriend or trying to set up her brother with a classmate (yes, this really happened) or get dressed up when she can (for parties or holidays).

When she gets her face painted, she truly feels like a princess.  Once in a blue moon, I will give her some clear Lip Shimmer.  Once again, she feels like a princess.  When she wears her earrings, she feels like a princess.  All fingers point to princess.

But nail painting, that is where I draw the line right now. (No pun intended.)  I did tell her when she turns six I will let her paint them.  And even then, it will be soft colors like pink and clear and glitter.

But when it happens, I think I will cry.   *sigh*

greatness…

Is it wrong that I want my children to feel greatness?

I want them to feel the joy of working hard and celebrating a win. Weather it is finding a job that they enjoy or winning in the Olympics/World Cup/whatever sport they excel in, I want them to WANT it. Making them realized they can do whatever they set their minds on.

I can sense greatness in both of them and it hurts when they cannot see it. It hurts when they give up because they think they can’t. It hurts when someone tells them they are not good enough.

I cannot shelter them forever. They will have to find that greatness in their own way. But the one thing I can say is I will be there all the way.

first 10 miler ever…

In 2007, a friend asked me if I was interested in running a half marathon.  I thought about it and said sure, why not?  Not knowing this was going to be the first of many. 🙂

But any whoo, during the training, she came across the Park Forest Scenic 10 mile and 5K race that fit right into our training schedule.  I finished my run in 1:59:22.  And here is the medal that I got.

Park Forest Scenic 10 Miler

I don’t think this race exists anymore.  Sad because it was a really nice route.  The run took you through a forest preserve and parts of Park Forest.  I did find that 2007 was the last year they did the 10 miler.  The next couple of years it was a 5 mile race and it looks like no more.

riding the path…

We went on a 15 mile bike ride on the lake front path yesterday.  We knew by going south, it wouldn’t be as congested as going north.  Once we passed McCormick Place, the foot traffic really dwindled.

As we were biking, I was trying to relay the rules of biking riding on the path to Diego:  stay on the right, say “on your left” when passing, keep an eye for walkers, bikers, roller bladers, etc, etc.  I think he is more confident biking now.  Especially since he took out his new bigger Haro bike.  I think the Gremlin is done and will be passed on to Mia.

We ended up by 61st Street.  Then we turned around and had a picnic at the Promontory Point Park.  Something we had promised the kids we would do.

When we arrived, Eric and the kids walked to the edge to check out Lake Michigan.  It was such a beautiful moment. I love how all three are holding hands: Mia is holding Diego’s hand, Diego is holding Eric’s hand.  *sigh*

We found two “treasures” while we were there.  Had some chicken salad sandwiches and beef jerky with drinks.  So nice to chill and hang with the family.  After 45 min, we started our way back north.

The bike ride took us 2:15.  I did not include the picnic so that would have added another 45 min.  I am so proud of Diego.  He did it.  We are so ready for the Bike the Drive next week. 🙂
